What do you know about the influential French philosopher
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne? Have you ever visited the castle where he was born?
Just up the hill from Lamothe Montravel, tucked away behind the small village
of St Michel de Montaigne, you will find this magnificent 19th
Century chateau.
As famous to the French, as Shakespeare is the the
British, Michel de Montaigne wrote over 100 Essays in his lifetime on subjects
as varied as ‘That we Laugh and Cry at the Same Time’, ‘Of Thumbs’ or even ‘Of
the Custom of Wearing Clothes’.
High on the hill, with a fabulous view over the
countryside you can visit the tower where he wrote (and escaped from his wife
and mother) and walk through the gardens.
If you’ve never been, take trip up there one afternoon,
there’s a lovely English St Michel de Montaigne Major student conducting tours
this summer.
Whatever you do this week in the Dordogne and Gironde
regions, have a great time.
Best wishes,
Helen
