Hello!
The sunshine is here, and it brings with it the awakening of
the hornet queens from their winter hibernation. Now is the time when they are out and about
searching for a place to build their new nests.
They never have the same nest as the previous year as they are built of
mud and dust and don’t survive the winter.
SO, now is the time to trap them… no hornet queen means no hornet nest
and our bees can have a peaceful and bountiful summer.
In 2011 the Gironde Beekeeping Association (SAG) reported
the loss of 520 beehives due to the Asiatic Hornet. (To read more go to http://www.sudouest.fr/2012/04/17/la-chasse-aux-reines-690354-713.php
)
Making a hornet trap is simple, all you need is a plastic
water bottle. Cut it in 2 horizontally
and turn the top and over and put it into the bottom. Seal it together with sellotape, fill it with
bait and hang it from a tree. The best bait
is a mixture of dark beer, dry white wine and syrup (grenadine flavour is good,
but any sweet syrup will work). The dark
beer and syrup attract the hornet and the white wine will repel the bees. There is no limit to how many traps you
should hang in your garden – the more the merrier…
Have a good week,
Best wishes,
Helen

The Pays Foyen FrancoBritish week has been running for 5 years,
and planning is already underway for this summer’s week long event. To ‘kick’ things off (if you will excuse the
pun) Ronald Marsh has written the following message. If you are interested in taking part in the
rugby match, or being involved in any way with the FrancBritish week, please
don’t hesitate to contact him.

Ste Foy la Grande
Franco – British Week, 24th to 31st August.
A Francophone – Anglophone
Rugby match.
Dear Secretary and fellow rugbymen,
For the past 6 years we have celebrated a Franco – British
week here in Ste Foy la Grande. The
object of this week is to bring together the Francophone and Anglophone
communities in the Pays Foyen. There is
a full programme throughout the week covering a wide variety of topics, food:
wine tasting, art, music, cinema, guided visits, English picnic etc.
We have had some sporting activities such as boule, cricket,
darts and golf but we would like to include a friendly rugby match between a
French side and a side of Anglophones.
Stade Foyen has offered both to host the match and to put
together a side from their club to play the Anglophone team.
We would like to hear from any English speaking players who
would enjoy taking part in this game and the festivities afterwards.
The proposal is to have an early evening game mid-week with
the possibility of an after match BBQ.
If you have any Anglophone players in your club or know of
any in other clubs near you will you please give them this letter and ask them
to get into contact with me. We would
welcome any players from 18 years old to vets.
Age should be no limit.
By Anglophones I mean players from Great Britain, Ireland,
Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Isles, Canada or other English speaking
players.
I hope this will be a unique opportunity to use rugby as a
way of integrating our two communities and having some fun.
I very much look forward to receiving your response to this
idea.
My sincere regards,
Ronald Marsh.
Great letter - still enjoy reading even tho' we are now in sunny Cape Town at the moment.
