Week 9 2017

Hello!

Wow! Monday was a day for watching the cranes flying overhead!  Almost non-stop through the
morning I could hear the call of the birds and the distinctive V shape in the skies.  It seems like they use the river as a signpost, or, as someone suggested, thermals of warm air help them to gain height. Whichever it is, Monday was a busy day in the airways.

Apparently, according to the wildlife team at the lakes in Arjuzanx 3,144 cranes were counted that morning. Another observer counted around 24,000 cranes between 12h30 and 14h30 in the Limosin the same day.  This would mean we were right on the flight path as they headed up to Champagne  that morning.  This map shows the sightings of cranes that day.
Cranes spotted on Monday through France.
If you want to find out more about the migratory adventures of cranes there's a good site here.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, keep an eye out for cranes heading north and have a great time.
Best wishes,
Helen
