Week 44 2016

Hello!
Don’t forget the clocks go back this weekend on Saturday night.
The time changes on October 29 at 2:00 am which means you'll have a shorter night out, but an extra hour in bed on Sunday morning. To remember which way to set your watch, there's a useful mnemonic: “spring forward, fall back”

It’s not such an old system, in fact it was an Englishman, William Willet, who first suggested it in 1907, but it didn’t actually start until the Germans accepted the idea in 1916.
France hasn’t always been 1 hour ahead of GMT, initially in 1911 France adopted the same time at Greenwich, but during the occupation in 1940 it assumed the German time zone. Following the end of the war, it returned to Greenwich time.

All change again in 1975 when the president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing , prompted by the extremely high petrol prices, moved the clocks forward 2 hours in spring and then back 1 in autumn and thus bringing us to our present day time zone.
Since 1998 the dates for changing the clocks throughout Europe were harmonised.
To read more about this, see the article from the Telegraph here

Whatever you choose to do with your extra hour on Sunday morning, have a great week.

Best wishes,
Helen

Week 43 2016

Hello!

You probably know that I'm mad keen about hot air balloons, so this weekend was a treat with the Balloon festival in St Emilion.

On Friday the balloons floated over Castillon and dropped down to check the water...

Wonderful images.

If you know of events or activities and want to share them on the Newsletter, please don't hesitate to send them to me.

What ever you do in the Dordogne and Gironde regions this week, have a great time.

Week 42 2016

Hello!

Great fun at the Brocante in Rauzan at the weekend.  The sun shone and there's was much to see.  I even saw some more of those strange ceramic pipes!  Did you guess?  They're old conduits for channeling electric cables through the walls of the house.  No longer in use, apparently all ceramic fittings for electricity are now illegal (that goes for light switches too).

We picked up a few items, and I got more animal knife rests. Still not sure what the beast on the right is!

The balloon festival takes off in St Emilion this weekend.  I had a great view last year, head up to the top of the village for the best views.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a great time.
Best wishes,
Helen

Week 41 2016

Hello!

Hand picked (by me!)

You don't have to travel far on the roads this week before you meet a tractor with a trailer or some kind of grape harvesting machinery.  The wine harvest is in full swing and we had a great time at Claribes last week helping to hand pick the 2016 Rose.  Rumour has it that 2016 will be a phenomenal vintage throughout the region!

Best of all though, is this road sign, seen around the Duras region... do they have that much juice they can afford to spill some?

Coming up this weekend is one of my favourite brocantes.  Maybe see you in Rauzan?

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a great time and enjoy the sunny days.

Best wishes,
Helen
