Week 31 2015

Hello!

Lock up your chickens!  Friday morning when I went to let out our 4 elderly girls from their little chicken house I was met by an open door and a hole in the chicken wire fence.  Not your average fox-under-the-wire attack, but a mid-height wire-cutting-man-sized hole.

I don’t know why anyone would want to steal 4 geriatric old ladies (they left behind 2 eggs) and why they would go to the trouble of cutting through the fence, but the trail of feathers led to a convenient parking spot just round the corner.

Be aware… be vigilant… and put a strong electric current through your chicken fence!

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a lovely time.

Best wishes,
Helen

Hello!

A fun day at the waterfront in Castillon for Bastille Day.  I had never seen the Barrel Rolling Team from Lussac St Emilion before.

Despite the heat of the day they were up and down the Quai showcasing their skills.  I even learnt how to take video on my phone...

Week 29 2015

Hello!

This week has France’s biggest national holiday.  14th July is Bastille Day, it commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution. Although the Bastille only held seven prisoners at the time of its capture, the storming of the prison was a symbol of liberty and the fight against oppression for all French citizens. It marked the end of absolute monarchy, the birth of the sovereign Nation, and, eventually, the creation of the (First) Republic, in 1792.

Bastille Day was declared the French national holiday on 6 July 1880, on Benjamin Raspail's recommendation, when the new Republic was firmly entrenched. Bastille Day has such a strong signification for the French because the holiday symbolizes the birth of the Republic.

There are many ways to help the French celebrate their big national holiday.  Throughout the area there are village parties with live music and fireworks, some places celebrate on the 13th July, leaving the 14th as a day to recover, whereas others stick to tradition and celebrate on the 14th. The largest firework display is in Paris at the Eiffel Tower.

Wherever you celebrate Bastille Day in the Gironde and Dordogne regions have a great week.

Best wishes,
Helen

And Finally…

Here’s some things for children to do too.  Also, if the dates don’t fit with your plans, try calling the person organising the activity as it could be possible that they can arrange a date and an activity that works for you both.
