Week 34 2013

Hello!
Montcaret in the shade

We’ve had a busy week out and about in the Dordogne and Gironde.  The Brocante in Montcaret was in a lovely shady spot under the trees behind the train station and this made browsing the stalls easy.  The Castillon brocante and vide grenier was held along the river front – a lovely location, but no shade from the bright sunlight.

Castillon on the waterfront
The Battle finished this year with a full house and a great performance.  Congratulations to all the participants, both on stage and back stage.

Next week is Franco British Week, held in and around Ste Foy and Pays Foyen.  There is a whole range of activities and events going on for further information please go to www.francobritishweek.com  or click on the link at the side of this page.

Best wishes,
Helen

And finally…

Franco-British Week No 7.

Friendly rivalry between the French and British has always been at the centre of our two cultures, and the FBW wants to encourage this in an amicable way.
Is tennis your game?  Are you Murray in disguise?  If so, the Tennis Club Foyen is where you should be on Tuesday 27th August and Friday 30th August.  From 9am to midday, they are hosting, at their courts, at allee Paul Ducou (Route du Fleix), Porte Ste Foy, a friendly competition, between mixed international teams.  The teams will be made up on the day so all you need to do is turn up with your racket and tennis gear and enjoy a great morning’s fun. This is an event to bring family and friends to watch the sport and then enjoy a lunch time picnic on the banks of the Dordogne. Please bring a dish, sweet or savoury, to share with all those present.
To help the club with the organisation of the day please make your booking, giving the number of players, friends and family you are bringing, with Anne Marie Littlefield on:- 06 19 13 43 26 or by e-mail am.littlefield@orange.fr
180!!! Is the number which anyone who has thrown a dart would dream to hear, but if like me you are happy just to hit the board, then Friday 30th August from 7.30pm, the place to be will be the Comptoir des Sports, place du Marche in Ste Foy la Grande.  This will be a very typical “British” evening, with a fish and chip supper interspersed with games of darts between teams made up on the night.  Those who enjoyed this event last year will know just how much fun the evening will be.
Never fear, the children have not been forgotten. On Wednesday 28th August from 3pm in Place de la Marie, Ste Foy la Grande there will be old fashion games for them to enjoy.  I think they will be surprised to find out the origin of the many games they now play on their computers.  Please turn up in numbers and enjoy the fun.

Week 33 2013

Hello!
Village d'Alienor

This is the final week of the Battle of Castillon.  As you may have gathered I’m a BIG fan (so much so, our cats are called Talbot and Ellie…).

Tasting the local wine
This year the weather has caused great disruption and 2 of the 12 shows were cancelled.  To make up for this, an extra performance has been added this week on Thursday 15 August.

Who will you play against...?
The re-enactment of the final battle of the Hundred Years War between England and France is a wonderful event.  Set on the hillside behind Castillon, 500 volunteers work together to make an unforgettable evening’s entertainment.  The show starts at 10.30pm as night falls, but before that there is lots to do and see and eat!

The women sword fight too!
Try your hand at the old wooden games, watch the swordsmen and women limbering up, taste Cotes de Castillon wines and visit the le Village d'AliĂ©nor. You can also eat at the open-air Mediaval restaurant, with duck or steak cooked on an open fire.  An evening at the battle site is much more than just the show.

Dine at the Mediaval Auberge before the show.
It’s not too late to book your ticket and there’s an extra date this week.  Go to the website and click on the booking at the bottom of the page.  You can pay with your credit card and pick up your tickets on the evening of the show. http://www.batailledecastillon.com/

However you choose to spend your week – have a great time.

Best wishes,

Helen

And finally…

 Franco-British Week No 6

For me one of the greatest pleasures of our region is the food and wine, and thus it is not surprising that the FBW offers this in abundance.  I have already written about the wine tastings that you can enjoy at Cave Laregnere so I hope that this will encourage you to partake in at least one or even all three of the dinners, each with its own special theme.
On Saturday 24th August at 8pm, the FBW will start at Chez les Zucc’s in La Roquille, with a Franco-British dinner complete with wine tastings, to complement the meal, by Michel Baraton. The two chefs Elizabeth Zuccolotto and Vivien Marsh are planning a dinner to reflect the best of French and British cooking, so come and enjoy this experience. The cost of this 40 Euros, wine included.
On Tuesday 27th August at 7.30pm you can enjoy at the Restaurant Cote Bastide, in Ste Foy la Grande, the totally different experience of a gourmet buffet together with wine tasting by Michel Baraton.  Those who have enjoyed the fine food at this restaurant will know that you will be in for a special evening and if you don’t know Cote Bastide, you should come along enjoy this delightful restaurant.  The cost of this is 40 Euros, wine included.
Thursday 29th August at 7.30pm, La Maison dans les Vignes at Riocaud, offers a completely different evening of a dinner with Jazz.  There is a choice of menu, which you make at the time of your reservation, and the cost of this is 35 Euros which includes your wine.
For all of these reservations are essential:-
Chez Zucc’s, 05 57 46 58 31, Cote Bastide, 05 57 46 14 02, and La Maison dans les Vignes,
05 47 84 98 69.
