Week 48 2015

They said you couldn’t keep a good thing down for very long.  This week the new association for the Battle of Castillon has been formed.  All interested parties are invited to go along and be part of the new venture on Friday 27th November at the the Salle Municipal in Belves de Castillon.

I lost count of how many people told me they were sorry that there was no more Battle as last year was the very year they were going to go!  So, let’s hope this is the start of a new and improved Battle (perhaps England will win!!!)  And even if you can’t take part, please remember... come the summer, go and see a show.

Best wishes for a chilly week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions,

Week 47 2015

Do you know that book ‘Where’s Wally?’ It’s where you have to look at the illustrations packed with all sorts of things and find certain items. I love that book and that’s one of the reasons I love a rummage in a brocante. The display cases are like my very own version of  Where’s Wally?

Can you find … a black cheroot holder… 12 swans… sugar nips… a blue car… 2 pairs of spectacles… a yellow light bulb… a cigar cutter… a collapsible ruler… a red rose… 4 watches…an aeroplane… a pair of compasses…blue and yellow flippers… a whiskey pourer…5 folding pen-knives and a thing for getting bits out of the horses hooves.

Whatever you are doing (or looking for) this week, have a  great time in the Gironde and Dordogne regions.

Best wishes,

And finally…

If you are looking for a way to send Christmas things over to the UK or farther afield this Christmas, you may want to take a look at Sendmybag A quick look at the quote for France to England looks quite ‘interesting’.  Recommended by a friend (thank you CT) it looks like it might be a good solution to the ever increasing French postal costs, not to mention luggage allowance restrictions.

Week 46 2015

Rauzan indoors...

... and outdoors.
Last weekend saw the re-opening of the winter Marche des Puces (flea market) in Rauzan.  It was both inside and outside the large hanger.  There is a restaurant as well as a bread stand and a couple of vegetable stands.  But for me, the pull of the market is the possibility that one week I’ll find a treasure.

It’s open every Sunday, all day, through until the spring.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, enjoy the everlasting autumn!

Best wishes,

Last week my Alistair Sawdays’ Inspector’s hat took me to a wonderful property overlooking the fairway at Chateau de Vigier.  A little slice of heaven! Vigier has recently come under new management and has great deals on green fees for locals.  Have a look here to find out more.
I had a delicious lunch in view of the 4th hole.  A golfer’s paradise.

Week 45 2015

What a wonderful autumn we have been having.  I don’t remember the last time we were sitting outside having lunch at the beginning of November.  The autumn colours have been just stunning.  It’s my least favourite season, but when the sun shines and the vines glow with golden leaves it’s not that bad!

There are Christmas markets coming up, if you have information about any events that you would like me to add to the blog, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.  I can edit during the week, so it’s not too late if you send it after I’ve posted the newsletter.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne region, have a great time.

Best wishes,

Coming up…

Hello All
If anyone would like to place and order for the Tuesday 10th November I will be available in your area for deliveries during the afternoon.
I am doing rolled fruit filled legs and shoulders of lamb for Christmas.
There is also the usual selection of sausage meat, chipolatas and if you would like a Christmas ham please let me know before the 15th November.
I will deliver on Tuesday 8th December.
During Christmas and up until the end of January I will not be attending any markets but I will be available to take orders for this period the butchery does not require a complete paint job this year so shut down will be not happen.
I strongly recommend that if you want something specific for Christmas that you make your orders well in advance, last year I had nothing left in the cold room and had to empty my freezer to fulfil orders for others.

Kindest regards

And finally…

I’ve come up with a delicious solution to all those apples in season right now – it’s perfect for windfalls too.
One Bowl Apple Cake - This cake is deliciously moist and easy to make.

2 eggs
1 3/4 cups sugar
2 heaping teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup oil
6 medium apples
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder.

·        Preheat oven to 180°C.
·        In a large bowl, mix the eggs, sugar, cinnamon and oil.
·        Peel and slice the apples and add to mixture in bowl (coating as you go to keep apples from turning brown.)
·        Mix together the baking powder and flour and add to the ingredients in the bowl.
·        Mix well until all of the flour is absorbed by the wet ingredients.
·        Pour mixture into a greased 23cm round pan.
·        Bake for approximately 55 minutes.
