Week 48 2012

Hello,

Only 29 days (or should that be sleeps?) until Christmas.  How are the preparations going?  There are plenty of Christmas markets around with shopping opportunities. Keep your eye on the ‘Christmas Market’ page of the blog as I update it as I hear of more markets.  The one in Bordeaux is lovely.  If you go along at the end of the afternoon then it’s great to browse along the stalls warming your hands on a glass of mulled wine with all the twinkling lights. It will certainly put you into a festive mood.

Week 47 2012

Bordeaux waterfront
Hello!

A beautiful sunny week.

Firstly I must thank everyone who has helped me to identify the mysterious nocturnal catlike creature that I met on the road by Ste Radegonde.  I am quite sure that it was a European Genet.  Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genet_%28animal%29 and see if you agree, and many thanks to CH who recognised it, despite the moth-eaten look of the animal in the photo.

If you are planning a trip to Bordeaux then it is an ideal time to visit both the Antiques Fair and the Christmas Market.  They are right next to each other and are open from Friday 23 November.

Have a good week,

Best wishes,

Helen

And finally…

Disaster has befallen our beehives and last week it became clear that the 2nd hive was rather too quiet.  Tom took it apart and inside he found the remains of the hive, but not a single bee or drop of honey.  The comb is an amazing structure, but not even a riverside location could prevent the bees from leaving.  We think that the continual bombardment from hornets finally drove them away.

The combs from inside the hive.

Week 46 2012

Movember

Hello!

During the month of November each year, Movember asks men across the world to grow a moustache with the aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health issues. Guys then start Movember 1st with a clean-shaven face and for the remainder of the month dedicate themselves to growing a fine moustache. Tom is cultivating a moustache for charity, more info here http://fr.movember.com/en/, and donations, gratefully received, can be made via http://mobro.co/tomwoods33 (there’s even a photo – so you can follow his progress).

November is also the month that showcases Castillon at its best, the trees that line the avenue as you approach from the Ste Foy end are always quite beautiful.

As always, there are plenty of activities, the Pompdou exhibition continues in Libourne and the Christmas markets are already starting (is it ever too soon to start Christmas shopping?)

A Kandinskyfrom the Pompidou Expo
