Week 7 2015

Hello!

When the sun comes out the world looks different, brighter, happier, and we are reminded of the beauty of the region.

Today I was lucky enough to be in St Emilion on a sunny winter morning.  The village is coming out of hibernation and all around there were people cleaning windows, repainting woodwork and jet washing stonework.

There were plenty of notices in restaurants with re-opening messages around 11th and 12th February.
So, if you haven’t been over to St Emilion in a while, it’s reopening for spring… go there and enjoy rediscovering the village.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a lovely sunny time.

Best wishes,
Helen

Week 6 2015

A great week for VO films in Libourne.

Monday 2 February

The Catholic holiday of Candlemas, on 2 February, is a feast to commemorate the purification of the Virgin Mary and the presentation of baby Jesus. In France, this holiday is called la Chandeleur, Fête de la Lumière, or jour des crêpes.

Not only do the French eat a lot of crêpes on Chandeleur, but they also do a bit of fortune telling while making them. It is traditional to hold a coin in your writing hand and a crêpe pan in the other, and flip the crêpe into the air. If you manage to catch the crêpe in the pan, your family will be prosperous for the rest of the year.  There is also a train of thought that suggests you should keep this well flipped pancake on the top of the wardrobe for the year to doubly ensure good fortune…

He became galvanized, however, by the love of fellow Cambridge student, Jane Wilde, and he went on to be called the successor to Einstein, as well as a husband and father to their three children. Over the course of their marriage as Stephen's body collapsed and his academic renown soared, fault lines were exposed that tested the lineaments of their relationship and dramatically altered the course of both of their lives.
