Week 10 2014

Hello!
Beignets

Tuesday is Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday) which is the French word for Shrove Tuesday.  As in the UK, the French celebrate with a dessert made from eggs, milk and flour, though the French recipe becomes ‘beignets’ (do-nuts) rather than pancakes.

While the origins of Mardi Gras in France are religious and spiritual, Mardi Gras is mainly celebrated today simply because it is fun.  Mardi Gras in the 21st century is one big party, and those who observe Lent and celebrate Easter celebrate Mardi Gras right alongside those who do not.  But the biggest party of all is in Paris.

However you choose to celebrate Mardi Gras, have a good week.

Best wishes,

Helen

Hello Everyone,
Please note the change of time for Tuesday 11th March at 3.30pm next to the church in St.Méard de Gurçon.
This also means I will not be able to come to Castillon la Bataille or St.Foy le Grande this week so if you wish to order from these directions please let me know and I will make other arrangements directly with you.
There is the usual choice of products which you can choose from our website www.franklinfarm.fr. Do not hesitate to ask me if you would like a special joint of lamb prepared for a celebration for example a stuffed, rolled leg or shoulder of lamb.
If anyone would like something different this month I can prepare:
Herb and onion lamb-burgers
Spicy Morroccan meatballs
Garlic and smoked paprika pork sausages (continental style ie: no rusk)
Italian spiced pork sausages (also no rusk)
If you would like me to prepare something different please let me know as soon as possible.
Hope to see you soon don't forget the change of time.
Helen

And finally…

Beware of Processional Caterpillars

Processional Caterpillars have unfortunately spread up from Spain and are now an increasingly common problem here.  I have had a few messages from people asking me to spread the warning word.  These caterpillars are poisonous and extremely harmful to animals if they eat them.  You see them marching in a long line down the side of pine trees and across the ground.  DO NOT TOUCH THEM!

They are making their way from their nests in the trees to underground where they build their cocoons and turn into moths.

To find out more about them go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_Processionary and more importantly, to find out how to destroy the nests go to http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Get-Rid-of-Pine-Processionary-Caterpillar-Nests

If you see a line of them on the ground, you can try stamping on them (in thick shoes) but please don’t touch them, or let your dogs go near them.
