Week 5 2020

Hello!

Did you know that the Catholic holiday of Candlemas, on 2 February, is a feast to commemorate the purification of the Virgin Mary and the presentation of baby Jesus. In France, this holiday is called la Chandeleur, Fête de la Lumière, or jour des crêpes.

Not only do the French eat a lot of crêpes on Chandeleur, but they also do a bit of fortune telling while making them. It is traditional to hold a coin in your writing hand and a crêpe pan in the other, and flip the crêpe into the air. If you manage to catch the crêpe in the pan, your family will be prosperous for the rest of the year.  There is also a train of thought that suggests you should keep this well flipped pancake on the top of the wardrobe for the year to doubly ensure good fortune…

Enjoy your pancakes and whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions – have a great week.
Best wishes,
Helen

And finally...
Come and make a Valentine gift (or keep it for yourself!) from ceramics on Saturday afternoon in Sauveterre.  I'll be showing you how to use coils for heart shaped wall hangings, plates and pots.
Contact me for more information, or even if you like the idea, but can't make the date, I can set up a workshop for a group of friends.

Week 5 2017

Hello!

It's time to dig out your frying pan and celebrate the French tradition of la Chandeleur. This Thursday is la Chandeleur. Though la Chandeleur is often associated with the Catholic holiday of Candlemas, it actually stems from pagan traditions. While some say Chandeleur celebrates the return of sunny days (crêpes symbolize the sun), others say that making crêpes using flour left over from the harvest ensures prosperity in the coming year.

And, of course, there is the traditional coin ritual: if you can toss a crêpe while holding a coin in your other hand, you and your family will not have to worry about financial problems.  Then there's the usual collection of dictons for any given celebration...
  • À la Chandeleur, l'hiver cesse ou reprend vigueur
On la Chandeleur, winter ends or strengthens

  • À la Chandeleur, le jour croît de deux heures
On la Chandeleur, the day grows by two hours

  • Chandeleur couverte, quarante jours de perte
la Chandeleur covered (in snow), forty days lost

  • Rosée à la Chandeleur, hiver à sa dernière heure
Dew on la Chandeleur, winter at its final hour
Find out even more about La Chandeleur here.
Whatever you do this week (whether there are crêpes or not) have a good week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions.

Best wishes,
Helen

And finally...

If you're in need of an eye examination, I had a good visit to the ophthalmologist in the new(ish) health centre building by the traffic lights as you drive into Ste Foy from the Castillon end. Mr Elkadi speaks beautiful English, the appointment was on time and his surgery even has easy parking! A total recommendation.  The only downside was that I made my appointment for this week 3 months ago...
