Week 15 2019

Hello!

Do you know how wine barrels are made?  We went to the Nadalie Tonnellerie in Ludon Medoc to find out more.  It's a great visit, you see all the stages of the barrel making process which blends the traditional skills that have passes down through the generations, with modern technology such as laser markings on the end of the barrels.  We learnt about the wood that makes the barrels and why the toasting is so important.

Call them up and make an appointment, visits are in the mornings in English and French.
Then round off the morning with lunch at the adjoining restaurant the 1902 (which is the year the cooperage was founded).

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a great time.
Best wishes,
Helen

And finally...

ALZHEIMER & DEMENTIA

France Alzheimer (Dordogne) currently has a small English-speaking support group that meets at Restaurant l’Etoile in St. Nexans for a coffee and chat (not far from Bergerac airport) from 10am on the first Tuesday of each month, to which anyone who has (or cares for someone who has) Alzheimer or any of the associated maladies is welcome.

However, funding has recently been approved for a specialised support facility that is proposed to be based in Eymet on a once-a-month basis.  This facility, called Halte Relais, provides professionally guided support for carers (normally a psychiatrist, or psychotherapist with specific knowledge of this category of illness) and a volunteer-supported activity period (run simultaneously) for the sufferers of these illnesses.

The English Group volunteer group would be delighted to hear of people in need of this for of assistance, and whether Eymet is a logical place to base such a facility.  We don’t currently have a dedicated email address, but can be contacted through the Facebook page @CarersInFrance, which is run by one of our members (you can also message us in this way, if you’d rather keep your contact with us private).

We’re also keen to find people who will assist us as volunteers with craft and musical-type activities and fundraising.

                                                           Thank you

Week 19 2016

Hello!

Have you ever wondered how they make the barrels that we see all around us, the ones they put the wine into?

We went and visited the Tonnellerie Nadalie in the Medoc to see how they are made.  They have a wonderful tour and as we walked through the barrel making workshop we learnt all about them.

Starting with the oak, sourced from French forests, through the cutting of the staves, the toasting of the wood and the forming of the barrels, it was almost all done by hand. It’s a great tour, there a super restaurant next door, and there’s wine tasting too – after all, you need to find out what goes into the barrels.

Whatever you do this week (a week of not 1, but 2 jour ferie) have a great time in the Gironde and Dordogne regions.

Best wishes,

Helen

And finally…

Eric the coffee man, a friend of Mr Notjustfortheholidays has  been spotted by AR.  Thank you for the photo and text.
Amazing coffee preparations! The lad at the back is roasting raw Ethiopian coffee beans over a wood fire in a bean roaster he had to keep turning by hand. The guy with the hat is hand-grinding the beans using a coffee grinder made 120 years ago by the Peugeot brothers. The final results of this hard labour were stunning!
These guys have been smoking the Ste Foy market out for months every Saturday morning, but only today have I finally given them a try. Will definitely be back...
