Week 27 2012

Live music at Gensac night market
Hello,

I just love living here when the sun shines, everyone comes out of hibernation, rubs the sleep from their eyes and embraces the great outdoors … not sure, though, why I can only just write this at the beginning of July!

The night markets are here, there’s certainly a niche in the market for anyone who offers something more exotic than melon as a starter, and don’t forget to take a bottle of water with you (even if it’s just to rinse your hands after aforementioned melon )

Waterside brocante at Flaujagues
Next weekend is the 24 Hours of Swing in Monsegur, but it actually lasts closer to 72 hours.  For more information about who is playing and when go to http://www.swing-monsegur.com/

Have a good week,

Best wishes,

This bitter sweet comedy follows protagonist Robbie as he sneaks into the maternity hospital to visit his young girlfriend Leonie and hold his newborn son Luke for the first time. Overwhelmed by the moment, he swears that Luke will not have the same tragic life he has had. Escaping a prison sentence by the skin of his teeth, he's given one last chance......While serving a community service order, he meets Rhino, Albert and Mo who, like him, find it impossible to find work because of their criminal records. Little did Robbie imagine how turning to drink might change their lives - not cheap fortified wine, but the best malt whiskies in the world. Will it be 'slopping out' for the next twenty years, or a new future with 'Uisge Beatha' the 'Water of Life?' Only the angels know........

And finally… (thank you BL)

There's an organisation called Que Choisir in Port Ste Foy and they are a bit like Citizens' Advice Bureau. I think one would describe it as 'consumer rights'.
They are only there on a Saturday morning, often from 9.30am it's 'manned' by retired lawyers and the like. They can help with any legal issues you have and will write letters on your behalf as it gives more gravitas if it comes from an organisation.
They charge a one off annual fee of €26 for a person for their services

UFC Que Choisir
52 rue Jules Ferry
Port Ste Foy
Tel: 0553 63 25 31 (Saturday mornings only)
At the Intermarché roundabout take the turning to Montpon then park on the right before the first set of lights. On the right is the Biblioteque and just round the corner is a door which says 'Que Choisir'. They are only there on Saturday mornings and while the sign on the door says it starts at 10am it’s wise to arrive earlier.

Week 26 2012

Hello!
Espiet - not just a brocante/vide-grenier

What is the difference between a Brocante and a Vide-grenier?

According to my dictionary, a Vide-grenier is a bric-a-brac sale and a Brocante is bric-a-brac trade or a flea market.  At the other end of the dictionary a Boot Sale translates as a Brocante and a flea market as a marche aux puces.  So, in theory a Vide-grenier is empty your attic, a sort of cross between a car-boot sale, a flea market and a yard sale.  On the other hand, a brocante is… (answers on a postcard please…) ?

St Pey d'Armens
Nevertheless, there are plenty coming up and you never know what you might discover, I know someone who found a diamond ring in a €1 box of junk jewellery.

This is also the season of Night Markets.  BL tells me that the one at St-Seurin-de Prats on Sunday was a great success with lots of people.  From mid-July it should be possible to find one most evenings of the week.  If you know about one that isn’t mentioned then you can always add it in the form of a comment at the bottom of the page – it can even be anonymous.

Have a good week,

Best wishes,

Helen

Week 25 2012

Gavin and lamb 171
Hello!

I have made a delicious discovery… Hidden away in the beautiful Dordogne countryside there is a couple who have set up a sheep farm.  They have 200 – 300 sheep, some of them hand reared, and their own butchery.  From here they butcher their own lamb (no question of provenance) and they make their own sausages from locally sourced free range pork.

We made a visit their last week (dodging the showers) and came away with sausages, bacon and a shoulder of lamb.  The sausages are made to a secret English recipe and come in a range of flavours – so far I’ve only tasted the breakfast sausages, and I’ll be back for more.  If you like English sausages, you need look no further.

Helen and her growing lambs
But the roast shoulder of lamb was tender and sweet, and quite honestly the most beautiful I have ever tasted.  We thought there would be leftovers, but there weren’t many…

If you would like to find out more about Gavin and Helen Franklin and their fresh farm produce you can contact them on 05 53 82 27 71 or visit their website http://franklinfarm.fr/

Week 24 2012

Roses (from my garden)
Hello!
I thought I’d just start with a few snippets of information (something to take your mind of the rain perhaps…)  And you can always add your own comments and events at the bottom of the page.

Firstly, don’t forget that as from 1st July the French Government make official the law that all cars must carry a breathalyzer kit.  The law does not actually come into effect until 1st November, so that gives you a few months to get one in place in your car.  For more information go to http://www.frenchbreathalyzer.com/

On another motoring note, I was surprised to find a new Radar on the approach to Bergerac Airport coming from the Monbazillac side.  I don’t know when it was put in place – but watch out!

I also heard today that the swimming pool at St Seurin sur l’Isle will be closed for repairs this summer (thank you HF).

And finally, the Plage, under the stone bridge at Castillon has opened for the summer.  It has undercover eating (in case of rain…) They serve up big salads and serious meat eaters should opt for the entrecote to share.

Enjoy your week,

Best wishes,
Helen

And one last thing (after all, we live here and are proud of our homes).

Hi ........
We are currently casting for the fifth series of the hugely popular ITV1 daytime show ‘May The Best House Win’. For part of this series we’ll be heading across the channel and filming in France.
The series features interesting homes that have been lovingly created by their owners, real passion projects and properties that are distinctive and express their owners personality, whether it’s people who live in interesting conversions, fascinating period properties, or who have filled their home with fascinating objects or artefacts, or decorated in a particular theme. Anything goes - so long as the homeowners really love their home.
In each episode we will feature 4 very different houses in a particular area. We will ask the homeowners to visit each of the other houses and award them marks out of ten. The winning homeowner wins 1000euros. It’s a fun show designed to bring together people with different tastes and different properties to discuss and debate their own ideas of what makes a home.
We are coming to France to film in a few weeks’ time. I was keen to see if you or anyone you know might be interested in taking part.
I would be very grateful if you could pass this message and flyer on to any relevant people and ask them to get in touch if they would like to talk about this a little more.
My direct line is 0044 207 157 4247
Kind regards
