Week 6 2013

Hello!

For all film fans, there’s plenty to see in English this week, though the times are quite varied with afternoon showings in Libourne.  Though if the weather is gloomy then why not go off to the cinema in the afternoon?  Please take care to check the film times before you go, sometimes they are not quite as advertised.

Last year at the Libourne Chinese New Year celebrations.

The Chinese New Year is being celebrated this weekend in Libourne.  The Year of the Snake kicks off with a Dragon parade mid-afternoon in Rue Gambetta.  Wrap up warm and go and have a look.

A film from 1984. A former Prohibition-era Jewish gangster returns to Brooklyn over 30 years later, where he once again must confront the ghosts and regrets of his old life. Starring a very young looking Robert De Niro, James Woods (a distant cousin perhaps!) and Elizabeth McGovern.

Saturday 9 February

9 February : Brocante in Libourne at Place Decazes.  This is held every 2^nd Saturday in the month.

9 February : Libourne Celebrates the Chinese New Year 2013 - the Year of the Snake
To celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year of the Water Snake:
15:30 at the Esplanade François Mitterrand for a dragon parade in Rue Gambetta.
At 16h, the dragon dance will be followed by exploding  firecrackers on the place Abel Surchamp.
A demonstration of traditional martial arts (Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Taekwondo ...) will be held until 17:00
The afternoon will conclude with a 'gouter' for the new year.

I was out in the garden yesterday and heard a noise that had me scanning the skies...  YES!  The cranes are flying north - spring must be just around the corner.

PS I tossed my pancakes with both hands - just to be sure!

Week 5 2013

Hello!

The Catholic holiday of Candlemas, on 2 February, is a feast to commemorate the purification of the Virgin Mary and the presentation of baby Jesus. In France, this holiday is called la Chandeleur, Fête de la Lumière, or jour des crêpes.

Not only do the French eat a lot of crêpes on Chandeleur, but they also do a bit of fortune telling while making them. It is traditional to hold a coin in your writing hand and a crêpe pan in the other, and flip the crêpe into the air. If you manage to catch the crêpe in the pan, your family will be prosperous for the rest of the year.  There is also a train of thought that suggests you should keep this well flipped pancake on the top of the wardrobe for the year to doubly ensure good fortune…

So now you know – and it’s a good chance to get a bit of practice before Pancake Day on 12 February.

This week looks like a good week to go to the cinema – plenty of choice and we should support our small local cinemas.

Week 4 2013

Hello!

A very friendly snowman

Rain didn’t stop play in St Emilion last weekend.  The ski team from the Pyrenees were out in St Emilion complete with a friendly abominable snowman!  Children (and adults) had access to a man-made snow covered mountain and a chance to fine tune their skiing skills before heading to the slopes this winter.  On Friday the weather even obliged with a covering of ‘real’ snow too!

Plenty of music events coming up this weekend and an evening with Jane Wenham-Jones to look forward to on Friday.
