Week 29 2013

Hello!

I love fireworks!  And these were the fireworks from Castillon on 14 July.  We stood on the end on the bridge and we were so close to the fireworks that it was like they were just for us…

This one is for my Mum...
We also went to the vide greniers in Castillon and I saw this interesting collection on one of the stands.

Hopefully by now, you will have seen the new page, especially for the Night Markets which are becoming a popular way to spend your evening (and no arguing about what to eat, and who will do the washing up…)  If you hear of any more, then please let me know and I’ll put them onto the page.  Keep an eye on the Night Market page as it will be updated and the changes may not make their way onto the Newsletter page.

Have a great week – the Battle of Castillon starts this weekend, and it’s easy to buy your tickets online, or pop into the office in Castillon, just next to the church.

Best wishes,
Helen

Week 28 2013

Hello!
Rauzan Night Market

The night market season started with enthusiasm in Rauzan last weekend.  The square behind the little school was packed with stands selling a lovely variety of food and drink.  There were people as far as the eye could see all joining together for the first really good Friday evening of weather we have had this year!
Delicious flat breads

We tasted delicious flatbreads which went extremely well with spicy boudin noir… an international blend of flavours!

This weekend coming heralds Bastille Day, the French national holiday, commemorating the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and the beginning of the French Revolution.  It marked the end of absolute monarchy, the birth of the sovereign Nation, and, eventually, the creation of the (First) Republic, in 1792.  But to me it will always be French Firework Night, and most towns and villages have their own displays.
Yet more choices

If you have a good firework display in your town or village, let me know and I’ll put it onto the Blog.

Have a great week,
Best wishes,
Helen

Week 27 2013

Hello!

Flaujagues night market 2012 (Get your Guinots wine here!)
It’s July and the Marche Nocturne (Night Market) season is starting.  But what is a Night Market?  It’s certainly nothing like a farmer’s market.  Think of it as an open air food hall with added entertainment.  There are long communal benches in the centre and all around local food producers, restaurateurs and caterers have stands selling their produce – it’s like street food I guess, but with the added comfort of somewhere to sit.

How does it work?  You choose what you’d like to eat, buy it from the stand and take it back to the table to eat and share.  So, you can buy your bread from the baker, your wine from a local vineyard and choose whatever else you like the look of, perhaps a plate of charcuterie, a duck breast cooked on the wood from old vines, moules frites or an omelette with cepes.  You just never know what you might find…
Night Market Kit

Whenever we go, we like to be a little prepared, so, we have a ‘Night Market Kit’!  In my basket I have sharp knives and forks.  The cutlery provided can often be plastic, which can make a steak hard work… I also add wine glasses, a bottle of water and serviettes.  We have a tablecloth too, just for fun – and once I saw a group with a candelabra!

Wherever you go, you’ll have a lovely time at the night markets, they’re full of friendly people enjoying an evening out, the entertainment often leads to dancing, and we often meet new people.  Try them, I’m a big fan!  If you hear of one in your area please let me know and I’ll add it into the blog.

Have a great week,
Best wishes,
Helen

And finally…

Did you know that you can take walking tour in Castillon on a Monday morning at 11h?

Take a visit to the town on a Monday morning and you will find that it is a lively, busy market town.  Head over to the tourist office, which is just on the corner of the square with the fountain in the middle, opposite the Credit Agricole Bank  (Not where the fountain was next to the traffic lights).

Jackie will be waiting for you, dressed up in a mediaval costume, and ready to take you on a guided tour of the village.

After the tour, why not head over the stone bridge and have lunch on the banks of the river at La Plage?
