Week 29 2014

Hello,

STOP PRESS!  The Battle of Castillon is Cancelled on Friday 18th and Saturday 19 July due to Severe Weather Warnings from Meteo France.  A replacement performance is scheduled for Thursday 24th July
If you have tickets for the cancelled performances please contact the Battle Office in Castillon 05 57 40 14 53, or go there in person, it's at road level to the right of the church.

561 years ago Castillon was the site of the last battle of the Hundred Years War (which actually lasted 116 years).  The Battle was won by the French due to their superior weapons including canons and guns, whereas the English only had bows and arrows.  The English were also battle weary and tired as they had marched hard to arrive in Castillon and the French caught them napping!  It all depends on which version of the story you choose to believe.

Castillon celebrates the Battle each year with an amazing show which runs over 5 weekends through July and August. Over 500 volunteers join together in this marvellous re-enactment which includes over 100 animals, with a pack of hunting hounds, farm animals and horses. The production itself is held in Belves de Castillon on a 7 hectare site with a raised grandstand giving all the audience a great view of the action from all angles.

To find out more please go to http://www.batailledecastillon.com/
Opening night is this Friday 18 July – Have you got your tickets yet?

And finally, yes, all you clever pig fanciers out there, you were right; the pigs are a cross with Gloucester Old Spots and Tamworth.

Whatever else you do this week in the Dordogne and Gironde, have a great time.

Best wishes,
Helen

Week 28 2014

Hello
Les Guinots held their first Night Market on Friday, and there were worried eyes watching the heavens, but someone was smiling as the evening stayed dry and it was a great success.

The car park in front of the the Cave co-operative was the ideal size for the event and the tables soon filled up with a great mix of people (though a football match did delay the start of proceedings for some).

We watched the sun go down over the vines and the energetic amongst us danced throughout the evening.  Night market season has arrived!

Thank you JS for the great sunset photo
If you know if a night market near you, or you have another event that you’d like mentioned on the blog then please send me some information.  It’s never too late, I can update the blog any time even after posting it.  I still don't have dates for Castillon or Blasimon.

Whatever you do, have a great week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions

Best wishes,
Helen

Coming up…

14 July : This is Bastille Day, the French national holiday, commemorating the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and the beginning of the French Revolution.  It marked the end of absolute monarchy, the birth of the sovereign Nation, and, eventually, the creation of the (First) Republic, in 1792.  But to me it will always be French Firework Night, and most towns and villages have their own displays.  If you know of a good one near you, then let me know.  Castillon always has a super display on the stone bridge at around 22h30.  Watch it from the waterfront in front of the Chai au Quai to get the best view.

14 July : La Fete de l’esturgeon et de la riviere at Montpon Menesterol.  Who knew that there was caviar produced just up the road?  Find out all about it at this festival

14 July : Vide grenier at Eymet

And finally…

We became part owners of a pig this week.  Not your ordinary common or garden pink pig, but these spotted ginger pigs!  We met them for the first time last week and will be feeding them apples and carrots until the autumn. They are a cross from two traditional British breeds – but can you tell which ones?

Many thanks to K&M for including us in their fabulous pig project.

Week 27 2014

Hello!

On the terrace at Lily Lodge
It must be 20 years since I last spent a night under canvas, so it was not without trepidation that we set off for a night ‘glamping’ in the forests of Les Landes.  What a revelation!

Tucked away in 20 hectares of landscaped forest are half a dozen Maharajah Hunting Lodges.  Made to measure in India and shipped over by Marie and Patrick, this takes camping to a completely different level.  Each tent Lodge has been erected on a wooden platform and has a terrace at one end overlooking the forest and the lake – perfect for the pre-dinner drinks.
Luxurious comfort inside

We dined together with the charming hosts on delicious home-made local delicacies including a tasty pate to start with and a yummy cherry clafoutis to finish.  I never thought I’d be converted to camping, but sleeping on a real bed with rugs on the floor and curtains at the windows is the way to go.  Even the thunder storm outside didn’t upset me – I was snug as the proverbial bug…
You can find out more about this fantastic hidden marvel at http://www.canopyandstars.co.uk/france/aquitaine/landes/palika-lodge/lily-lodge#back For sure we’ll be returning in the next few months.

Whatever you do in the Gironde and Dordogne regions (even Aquitaine) have a great week.

Best wishes,
Helen

And finally…

If you yearn for a taste of Britain, head over to the Gensake in Gensac and have an all-day Irish breakfast available from 11am on a Sunday.  The Irish black and white puddings were delicious and the bacon was superb.  There’s even Guinness for a truly authentic Irish experience.
