Week 37 2014

Hello,

Coffee set ready for the 27th September.
A beautiful week of sunny weather – must be something with it being back to school week!  We have been out and about at Brocantes looking for cups and saucers for the Macmillan/Cancer Research Coffee Morning on Saturday 27h September, and I found this great set – it’s even Macmillan colours!

Thank you for everyone who has already offered to come and help, to donate something, or to come and support.  But, I’m still looking for more donations of cakes and also eaters and drinkers! The Coffee Morning starts at 10 o’clock and I hope we can have coffees and teas (not forgetting cake) outside overlooking the river.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne region, have a great week.

Best wishes,

Helen

Week 37 2014

Monday 8 September

Tuesday 9 September

9 September 20h : Boyhood is showing in VO at La Breche Cinema in Ste Foy.
Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. Written by IFC Films

9 – 14 September : Photographic Exhibition in Eymet called ‘Caught on Camera’

Wednesday 10 September

10 September : Last night market at Monsegur

Thursday 11 September

Week 36 2014

Hello!

I’m planning a coffee morning on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support in the UK http://coffee.macmillan.org.uk/Home.aspx#.VAWQwGPrxu4  and the Institute Bergonie in Bordeaux http://www.bergonie.org/

There are not many of us who haven’t had our lives and those of our family and friends touched by Cancer.  Here in the region we have an amazing Cancer Hospital in Bordeaux, and in the UK they have the fabulous Macmillan Cancer support association, but they all need funds to keep them up and running. The coffee morning will be on Saturday 27 September and I’d like to invite you all to participate.  More details to follow, but if you would like to be involved please contact me on notjustfortheholidays@orange.fr

This week also calls for a celebration!  Notjustfortheholidays has now received over 100,000 visits!  From such a little newsletter that I started out of the frustration of trying to find out what was going on in the area, it has blossomed into this weekly blog.  Thank you everyone who has helped contribute, followed, recommended and sent me messages.  Without you, there would be no blog.

So, whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a great time.

Best wishes,
Helen

Week 35 2014

Hello!

Did you know that the crayfish is invading?  They arrived from America and now they have made their homes in the banks of the rivers and the lakes in France.  They cause damage by burrowing huge long tunnels into the banks so that eventually they collapse.

They are surprisingly easy to catch, and dipping a net into the water will soon gather an impressive harvest.  They need rinsing before eating (up to 5 times) and keep an eye on them as they are keen to escape.  Then tip them into boiling water, cook and serve!  An striking dish, and a delicacy in some parts of the world.  Bon appetit!
A Crayfish Supper.

This is Franco British Week in Ste Foy la Grande. See the full programme complete with contact numbers and full addresses at http://francobritishweek.com/

Whatever you do in the Grionde and Dordogne regions, have a great week.

Best wishes,

Helen
