Week 11 2015

Hello!

The sun has been out and so have we… out tidying the garden and watching as plants begin to burst into life again.  I learnt this week that the vines begin to grow at the same time as the chestnut trees.

Now is also the time when the bees and the hornets come out of their hibernation.  Successive years of determined hornet trapping around our garden meant that last year we saw relatively fewer hornets and as a result increased our bees from 2 hives to 4.

Make a trap from an old plastic water bottle.

Continuing the theme – now’s the time to set your hornet traps.  They are easy to build and amazingly successful, just don’t empty them out, top them up with more bait, it’s true, nothing seems to be more effective at attracting another hornet, than a trapped one!  Though the first traps should be laced with a mixture of dark beer, dry white wine and syrup (grenadine flavour is good, but any sweet syrup will work).  The dark beer and syrup attract the hornet and the white wine will repel the bees.

Whatever you do this week in the gardens or out and about in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a great week,

Best wishes,
Helen

Ps – Congratulations to David, it was the Cathedral in Barcelona.

Week 10 2015

Hello!

We’re back and refreshed after a couple of weeks touring in Spain.  A great country, but nothing beats back home here in France.

Though I have to say… the breakfasts were something else, my chocolate churros research was quite thorough!

Back home, there is lots going on.  If you have never been to the Independent Vigneron Salon in Bordeaux it’s certainly worth a visit.  Winemakers from all over France come together with their wines.  It’s a great way to get to compare the wines from different regions.  It runs from Friday to Sunday – more details below.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a great time.

Best wishes,
Helen

Week 7 2015

Hello!

When the sun comes out the world looks different, brighter, happier, and we are reminded of the beauty of the region.

Today I was lucky enough to be in St Emilion on a sunny winter morning.  The village is coming out of hibernation and all around there were people cleaning windows, repainting woodwork and jet washing stonework.

There were plenty of notices in restaurants with re-opening messages around 11th and 12th February.
So, if you haven’t been over to St Emilion in a while, it’s reopening for spring… go there and enjoy rediscovering the village.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a lovely sunny time.

Best wishes,
Helen
