Week 19 2016

Hello!

Have you ever wondered how they make the barrels that we see all around us, the ones they put the wine into?

We went and visited the Tonnellerie Nadalie in the Medoc to see how they are made.  They have a wonderful tour and as we walked through the barrel making workshop we learnt all about them.

Starting with the oak, sourced from French forests, through the cutting of the staves, the toasting of the wood and the forming of the barrels, it was almost all done by hand. It’s a great tour, there a super restaurant next door, and there’s wine tasting too – after all, you need to find out what goes into the barrels.

Whatever you do this week (a week of not 1, but 2 jour ferie) have a great time in the Gironde and Dordogne regions.

Best wishes,

Helen

And finally…

Eric the coffee man, a friend of Mr Notjustfortheholidays has  been spotted by AR.  Thank you for the photo and text.
Amazing coffee preparations! The lad at the back is roasting raw Ethiopian coffee beans over a wood fire in a bean roaster he had to keep turning by hand. The guy with the hat is hand-grinding the beans using a coffee grinder made 120 years ago by the Peugeot brothers. The final results of this hard labour were stunning!
These guys have been smoking the Ste Foy market out for months every Saturday morning, but only today have I finally given them a try. Will definitely be back...

And finally…

Can you help me please?  I was asked by guests in one of the holiday homes we manage, where they could go for a Truffling adventure.  I’m looking for any information you may have, any opportunities you know about to discover more about this hidden treasure, how it grows, how you find it, training the dogs (or the pigs) and using it in recipes.  Anything really, related to
truffles.

All information gratefully received.  Thank you!

Week 17 2016

Hello!

Have you been to St Emilion recently?  There are all sorts of new and interesting activities available.  Finally, this week, we took a trip on the little train that takes you round the vineyards and if you wish, you can stop and visit Chateau Rochebelle and visit their underground caves too.  I’ve watched that train for the last 4 years, and finally took a ride!

There are also tours available in the village by Tuk-tuk.  Looks like fun!  They both leave from the Car Park at the top of the village near the roundabout. Hopefully I’ll get round to a Tuk-tuk trip sooner than the train. Find out all about the activities available from the tourist Office in St Emilion here

There are horse riding tours, Harley Davisdon tours and hot air balloon rides!

Whatever you do in the Dordogne and Gironde regions this week, have a great time.
Best wishes,
Helen

And finally…

A great initiative from Port Sainte Foy – thank you Caroline for the information.

The two assistants, Delphine and Cyrielle, who work at the  vet clinic
in Port Ste Foy have taken the initiative to create a Facebook page called
"nos 4 pattes du pays foyen" which is devoted to increasing the chances of
reuniting all locally lost and found animals with their owners.

They are inviting all people who live in the Pays Foyen area to join this
group and they have asked me to spread the word.  Needless to say in order
to join this group it is necessary to be on Facebook already.

I went on to their Facebook Page and clicked on "join group".   The request
then remained "pending" until the girls had time during the day to check the
page - at which point they accepted me, whereupon I was sent a notification
that I was a member of their group.

Delphine explained that they would like us to tell our local friends and
their families about this group and encourage them to join so that we can
increase the chances of finding either the animals or the owners.

When you want to post a message on the page, if it is too tricky to write in
French it will be fine to write in English.
