Week 46 2016

 Hello!
On Friday 11 November France marks Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of World War 1 and is a public holiday. Special church services are held to remember those who died in the war and wreaths and flowers are laid at war memorials, most notably at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris.

For all you sky watchers out there, we'll have a 'Super Moon' on the evening of 14 November. A Supermoon happens when a Full Moon or New Moon coincides with the Moon's closest approach to Earth; also called perigee. A Super Full Moon looks around 12% to 14% bigger than its counterpart, the Micromoon.
It should be visible in the skies (clouds permitting) from around 18h. Find out more about Supermoons here.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a great week.
Best wishes,
Helen

Week 45 2016

Hello!

This week, 1 November is a public holiday called La Toussaint.  On this day many French people honour the lives of their deceased relatives by putting flowers on the family graves – traditionally chrysanthemums.  Most shops and restaurants will be closed as people generally try and spend the day with their family.  By the way, even though you might think that chrysanthemums would make a great gift – don’t try offering them to a French person, here they are flowers for remembrance. The cemeteries are filled with colour at this time of year.

Christmas is coming up and there are Christmas markets in the area. If you have any details of up-coming events, please don't hesitate to let me know and thank you to those who have already sent me details.

Whatever you do this week in the Gironde and Dordogne, have a great week.

Best wishes,
Helen

Week 44 2016

Hello!
Don’t forget the clocks go back this weekend on Saturday night.
The time changes on October 29 at 2:00 am which means you'll have a shorter night out, but an extra hour in bed on Sunday morning. To remember which way to set your watch, there's a useful mnemonic: “spring forward, fall back”

It’s not such an old system, in fact it was an Englishman, William Willet, who first suggested it in 1907, but it didn’t actually start until the Germans accepted the idea in 1916.
France hasn’t always been 1 hour ahead of GMT, initially in 1911 France adopted the same time at Greenwich, but during the occupation in 1940 it assumed the German time zone. Following the end of the war, it returned to Greenwich time.

All change again in 1975 when the president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing , prompted by the extremely high petrol prices, moved the clocks forward 2 hours in spring and then back 1 in autumn and thus bringing us to our present day time zone.
Since 1998 the dates for changing the clocks throughout Europe were harmonised.
To read more about this, see the article from the Telegraph here

Whatever you choose to do with your extra hour on Sunday morning, have a great week.

Best wishes,
Helen
