The Winter Sales - Les Soldes d'Hiver -  in France start this week on Wednesday 8th January. Sales in France are highly regulated with the government allowing just two sales periods a year - one in summer and one after Christmas.

You have until 4th February to bag a bargain!
Whatever you do in the Gironde and Dordogne regions, have a good week.

I hope that you all had a lovely Christmas time and and are heading into 2020 rested and refreshed!

And finally…

Monday 6 January is the last day of the Christmas season and traditionally the day Christmas decorations get taken down and packed away for next year.  The 12^th night is the day that the 3 wise men arrived in Bethlehem, taking gifts to the baby Jesus.

The French celebrate this day with a special cake called the ‘Galette des Rois’ (the King’s cake).   

This frangipane filled cake is served up according to tradition on 6^th January.  A lucky charm – known as a fève (originally a bean, but now more often a little porcelain figure) is baked into the cake.  As story goes, the cake is divided into enough slices as people present, and one extra, for the first poor person that passes by.  The youngest person in the group decides who has which slice, and the person who finds the fève is crowned king or queen for the day.  When you buy a Galette des Rois it usually comes complete with a paper crown.

So if you were wondering what to eat with your afternoon cup of tea, on 6^th January, it has to be a Galette des Rois!  Bon appétit!

 

Find a recipe here - but it doesn't mention adding the fève, so just push it into the frangipane before you cover with the pastry top.

Hello!

The Marche Noel in Sauveterre was a great success and lots of people popped in to say hello.  It was great to catch up with friends and to meet new people.  Thank you for all your support.  It's not too late to pick up a last minute gift - we're open every day until 24th (except Monday 23rd) .
